The Basics of the Exam
Almost all public high school students and many private and parochial school students in New York State must pass the Math A Regents exam to graduate. The test is usually taken after the first or second year of high school, although the timing can be fairly variable. The test contains a great deal of algebra, although it also contains other topics such as geometry, probability, and logic. There are both multiple choice and open ended questions on the test.
New York Academics’ Approach to the Math A Regents
New York Academics does not have a one-size-fits-all approach to preparing for the Math A Regents. For students who are struggling in their high school math class, we recommend that tutoring begin as soon as possible. For these students, we combine specific Regents preparation with support designed to help them more fully understand the concepts and methods taught in their high school math class. If necessary, we also provide remedial instruction in math skills that provide the foundation for Math A.
For students who are doing well in their math class and who have a strong understanding of the concepts that the Math A Regents tests, we recommend a short course of tutoring (often about six weeks). During this time, we identify and thoroughly review any weak areas the student may have. We also provide focused test preparation, in which we help the student fine-tune his or her ability to answer regents questions accurately and efficiently.
